Direct Care and Treatment (DCT) is seeking an individual to join our DCT General Counsel’s Office for an exciting and rewarding opportunity as a Senior Associate General Counsel! This position will provide legal expertise to the Department of Human Services (DHS) supporting DCT, with a focus on employment law, labor law, and affirmative action/equal opportunity. This position will have a high level of freedom to act with the authority to speak on matters related to their position. This position will also be providing legal advice on employment investigations, discipline, arbitrations, grievances, dispute resolution process as allowed within the respective collective bargaining plan, and collective bargaining process matters.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide DCT with legal advice in a variety of complex and changing areas affecting DCT to support DCT’s compliance with all state and federal laws.

  • Assist the Deputy General Counsel with coordinating the DCT’s litigation.

  • Collaborate with other DCT staff concerning implementation of DHS and DCT legal policies and best practices.

  • Conduct complex legal and policy research producing written products for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

JD degree from an ABA accredited law school.

AND

Current license and in good standing to practice law in Minnesota.

AND

Five (5) years’ experience as a practicing attorney in the area of employment law, labor law, and/or affirmative action/equal opportunity. Experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills.

  • Building and maintaining good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Providing legal advice to executive leadership on diverse and complex human services and data privacy matters.

  • Experience in multiple areas of law.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a CEO and an executive board.

  • Experience representing clients in civil litigation.

  • Experience working with the Attorney General’s Office and/or State government agencies.

  • Experience advising senior leadership.

  • Knowledge of and experience handling issues related to state and federal privacy laws relating to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.
